Rewards just as important as Goals

Setting new goals and adjusting existing ones are an important part of any runner’s training plan.  Whether we are training for our first half marathon or our 20th full marathon, we carefully map out our training program with the goal of running our event in an attainable yet challenging amount of time.  We analyze the race, breaking down our splits and training to the pace that will get us to our time goal.  I think we all would agree that goal setting is an important part of any successful marathon trianing program.

However, I would argue that setting a ‘reward’ for acheiving your goals is just as important and motivating than the goal itsself.  When you commit to a race, pay your entry fee, and begin training toward your goal don’t forget to define what your reward will be.  Sure, the feeling of crossing the finish line of that first marathon or half marathon is hard to beat.  Why not reward yourself with something that allows you to celebrate your victory in a big way.  Find something creative that you enjoy doing and share with your family or friends who have supported you during your training.

For me, my reward after running the Disney Marathon a couple of years ago was to go directly from the finish line to one of my favorite cruise lines…The Disney Wonder.  Not only was it a way to reward myself for my accomplishment but also a way to thank my family for their support and tolerance during my training.  As we boarded the ship later that day, I noticed quite a few people with their finisher medals and Disney Marathon shirts.  We instantly had a connection knowing what we had all been through just a few hours earlier.  As a travel enthusiast and a recreational runner I began to think that this is about the best ‘reward’ a runner could treat themselves to after all of their hard work.

One of my goals over the next few years is to be able to promote an enticing ‘reward’ to runners and running groups so they can experience a great vacation at the conclusion of their big race each year.  As you plan your first or your next half marathon or full marathon consider combining it with an unforgettable cruise or vacation.  We have strategically chosen cruises to promote that coincide with marathon weekends in or near port cities.  For the 2012 marathon season, we are featuring cruises for the Miami Marathon, the Disney Marathon, and the Charleston Marathon.  We will soon add more sailings for the fall season as well.  Allow us to assist in booking for you and your family, friends, or your running group.  Ask us about special amenities for your group as well as perks for the group leader for 8 cabins or more.
